Michael Gorman at UO

ALA President-Elect Michael Gorman visited the UO this week and gave an excellent talk. Concerning libraries, Social Security, schools, and other institutions developed for the public good, for example:

"There are people who want to abolish the 20th century, so we get the 19th century without the literacy, and with computers. Not much of a trade-off in my view. Whenever I hear the term "21st century literacy," I wish we had more 19th century literacy. That would be a very good thing."

Deans, Directors and Department Heads:

The Office of Academic Affairs is pleased to announce that information on the Faculty Instructional Technology Initiative program for 2005 is now available. There will be four jointly sponsored workshops during the summer of 2005, each one covering different approaches to instructional media and targeting different skill levels. All participating faculty will receive a stipend upon successful completion of the program.

We are also announcing a Resident Fellowship Award Program which carries a one-course release for the 2005-06 academic year.

All the details and application materials can be found on a link from the Academic Affairs website.
[Go directly to the Application Form]

We invite you to share this information with your faculty and ask that you encourage their involvement. The application review process will begin on February 28th for the workshops, and March 14th for the Fellowship program.

Information Commons/Learning Commons

Last week, we had a very informative meeting with Joanne Henning, Head of Reference Services at the University of Victoria Library. Joanne is on a six-month study leave and has toured many libraries with information commons. Her project site is well worth a visit for anyone interested in design, organization, management, &/or services offered in these facilities. Other useful resources include:
- ARL Spec Kit on the Information Commons
- Purdue's Digital Learning Center
- CNI Collaborative Facilities Project
