Follow Up Tasks and Resources
Thailand-Oregon Videoconference, September 12, 2003
There will be a month's time in between the
September videoconference program and Leslie
Opp-Beckman's visit to Thailand to work with teachers in
October 2004. During that time, teachers are invited to
explore the resources on this web page and on the
handouts listed below resources below.

Instructions for this Web Page
Go to each site below and start by doing the
suggested activity. As with all web sites, you are
welcome to further explore and evaluate related resources
that interest you.
- Icebreakers from Dave's ESL Cafe
http://www.eslcafe.com/ideas/sefer.cgi?Ice:Breakers
Task: Are your students sometimes shy? Are they
noisy and you want some new ways to focus their
attention? This web site with suggestions from other
English teachers may have an answer for you. See what you
can find!
- Lesson Plans from Internet TESL Journal
http://iteslj.org/Lessons/
Adaptable lesson plans in many skill areas for ESL and
EFL classes of all ages.
Task: Try to find a lesson plan idea that you can
use in your class. Tell a colleague about it!
- Lesson Plans from Discovery
http://school.discovery.com/lessonplans/
Lesson plans in English for many content areas for
primary and secondary learners.
Task: Look for a lesson plan that might work well
with a content or topic area in your class. Try it in
your class, and share your results with another
teacher.
- PIZZAZ Creative Writing
http://www.uoregon.edu/~leslieob/pizzaz.html
This web site has creative writing suggestions for ESL
and EFL classes of all ages.
Task: What would your students enjoy doing more, a
poem or a story? Choose one to try in class and email
your results to Leslie <leslieob@uoregon.edu>.
- Introduction to ESL Storytelling
http://www.cathyspagnoli.com/English/
Task: How comfortable are you with telling stories
out loud in class? Here are some great ideas for new ways
to bring this traditional way of teaching in your
classroom. Look for a story that interests you and fits
your students' interests. If necessary, make
adaptations.
- Step by Step Reading Project
http://www.soros.org/readingcorner/
- CNN Stories from LearningNet
http://www.literacynet.org/cnnsf/archives.html
- Moonlit Stories
http://www.themoonlitroad.com/
Task: Compare the reading materials at these three
web sites. How do they differ? Is one is a better fit
than the other for your students? If you don't like any
of them, what kind of reading materials would you like to
find instead?
- Index to Grammar Materials
http://web2.uvcs.uvic.ca/elc/studyzone/grammar.htm
This page is an index to a range of materials created for
teens and adult students.
Task: Choose a grammar point from your class text
or materials. Does this web site have a practice exercise
that matches that grammar point? If yes, is it or is it
not appropriate for the age and language level of your
students?
- Holidays from The Tower of English
http://towerofenglish.com/holidays.html
This web page has a list of U.S. holiday sites with
things to do at for each one.
Task: Can you find a holiday and an activity that
would work well in your class? If you don't have good
luck at this site, try New
Years Celebrations Around the World. How do your
students' Thai holidays compare to some of these?
