HONORS DEGREE IN ART HISTORY

Initial Requirements:

In the senior year, a student majoring in Art History may apply to the Chair of the Undergraduate Committee for the Department's Honors Degree Program if he or she has:

1. completed at least 40 credits in Art History courses with a 3.75 GPA

2. completed ArH 300 with a grade of A- or better.

3. completed the last term of the second year of the foreign language requirement with a grade of A- or better.

Admission to the Honors Degree Program is contingent on the following:

1. completion of the requirements listed above.

2. the student obtaining the agreement of a faculty member in Art History to supervise research on a topic relating to the faculty's interest and to serve as director of the Honors Essay.

A student who satisfies all of the above requirements and presents to the Undergraduate Committee chair a faculty member's written agreement to serve as Honors advisor will be admitted to the Honors Degree Program, normally at the beginning of Winter term.

Honors Degree Program and Its Development:

The candidate typically registers for 3-6 credits of Research (ArH 401) in winter term of the senior year to undertake research in preparation for writing the Honors Essay, and 4 credits of Thesis (ArH 403) in spring term, when writing the Essay.

Students are urged to present a first draft of the Essay to the faculty advisor 6 weeks before the end of the term, and a final draft must be submitted 2 weeks prior to the end of the same term.

Essay:

The Honors Essay will demonstrate the student's ability to formulate a significant research problem. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to handle sources in at least one foreign language, if they are relevant. The Essay should be 20-25 pages in text length (with double-spacing, font size10 or 12). This does not include notes in text, endnotes, bibliography, and illustrations. A copy of the Honors Essay will be deposited in departmental files.

Honors Designation:

A candidate whose essay has been approved by the faculty advisor and who has maintained a 3.75 GPA in all the remaining credits in Art History courses required for the major will be awarded departmental honors.
