ART HISTORY MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS (55 Credits)

Studio Art (4 credits)

Majors must take a minimum of 4 credits in fine arts (studio-based classes, such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, or design).

Two years of a Foreign Language as described under the University's Bachelor of Arts Requirements, but please note that for students interested in Western art, French and/or German are preferred since they are normally required for graduate work (see note below). (27 credits)

French, German, and Italian are the most commonly used languages in Western art history research; Chinese and Japanese are essential for most areas of East Asian art history. Because these languages are required for advanced research and/or graduate study in art history as well as other humanistic disciplines, majors are urged to choose one of them to satisfy the B.A. requirement. Substitution of other languages may be appropriate to a field of interest. Students are urged to consider future plans and to consult with their advisors when selecting a language for study.

Upper-Division electives in related areas (8 credits)

Majors must take a minimum of 8 upper-division credits in areas or disciplines outside the department that add depth and resonance to their program in Art History. These areas include literature, history, religious studies, philosophy, anthropology, and advanced work in a foreign language. These related courses must be taken at the upper-division level and should be chosen in consultation with the student's advisor.

Lower-Division Art History Surveys (16 credits)

Majors planning to specialize in Western Art History must take the introductory sequence ArH 204, 205, 206 (History ofWestern Art I, II, III) as well as at least one course from the introductory sequence in Asian art, ArH 207, 208, 209. Majors planning to specialize in Asian Art History must take ArH 207, 208, 209 as well as one course from the introductory sequence in Western art. (See note 1 below.)

ADVANCED REQUIREMENTS (40 Credits)

(See note 1 below)

ArH 300: Critical Approaches to Art Historical Study (4 credits)

Upper-Division Concentrations (32 credits)

Majors are required to take two upper-division courses in each of four of the following six areas or traditions: Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance/Baroque, Modern, East Asian, Non-Western. (See note 2 below.)

Four of these eight courses must be at the 400-level. Students with a special interest in the history of architecture may fulfill their four concentrations with appropriate 400-level courses in architectural history .

Art History Elective (4 credits)

One additional course taken from any of the departmental offerings at either the 300- or 400-level. Students who wish to pursue graduate study in Art History are encouraged to take more than two courses in areas of special interest.

Notes

1. All art history courses must be taken for letter grades, and must be passed with a C- or better.

2. The artistic traditions currently taught and included under the Other/Non-Western rubric are: Islamic, Indian, Judaic, Central Asian Buddhist, Nomadic, Scythian, Pacific Islands, and Native American. (The department is currently searching for a better and more sensitive designation for this category.)
