Thermal Comfort Plots

Thirty HOBO Dataloggers monitored temperature and relative humidity throughout the house as shown (see plans) from Feb 17th-22nd, 2006.

Above, data for Sunday, Feb 19th, a day typical of the set during which the house was inhabited for the full day, are compared to the ASHRAE 55-2004 standard for thermal comfort. Data points show hourly readings during waking hours (7:00 am -11:00 pm) for three representative HOBOS: 6 (downstairs), 14 (upstairs), 5 (near a south window).

According to ASHRAE, the Davis house would be delightful to only the savviest of solar cats. However, Mr. Davis finds little thermal discomfort at all in his house! This reveals important limitations of the standard, which does not consider activity level, mean radiant temperature, and clothing levels greater than 1.0 Clo.
